A Protected Landscape
Much of the area lies within the Dedham Vale National Landscape, the designated area formerly known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Add the conservation areas covering Dedham, Manningtree and Mistley, the listed buildings and the Tree Preservation Orders on individual trees, and the working assumption is simple: a mature tree here is probably protected. Checking status and giving notice is part of the job, not an afterthought.
Old Houses and Tight Lanes
Manningtree, Mistley and Dedham have narrow streets, houses fronting straight onto the pavement and long gardens behind. Access is often on foot only, so trees are climbed and dismantled in sections and the material carried out to the chipper. Parking has to be planned rather than assumed.
Riverside and Farmland Trees
Along the Stour and its water meadows there are willows and poplars on wet ground, many of them old pollards that split apart if they are left too long. Out on the farmland there are boundary oaks, hedgerow trees and long hedges. Ash dieback is widespread through the valley, and roadside and boundary ash are the trees most often needing attention before they turn brittle.
Two Councils, One Valley
Manningtree and Mistley are in Tendring District Council. Dedham is in Colchester City Council. They are a couple of miles apart, and an application for one goes to a different authority than for the other.
Permissions in the Stour Valley
This area has more overlapping protections than anywhere else we work, so it pays to check before planning anything.
Which council. Manningtree, Mistley and Lawford go to Tendring District Council. Dedham, Ardleigh, Langham and Boxted go to Colchester City Council. We confirm which applies and make the application or notification for you, free of charge.
Conservation areas. Work on a tree with a trunk of 75mm or more in diameter at 1.5 metres in a conservation area normally needs six weeks' notice. Much of Dedham, Manningtree and Mistley is covered.
Tree Preservation Orders. Consent is needed before pruning or felling a TPO tree. Dead or immediately dangerous trees are a limited exception, but photographs and notice are still expected.
Countryside hedgerows. Removing most field boundary hedgerows over thirty years old needs notice to the council under the Hedgerow Regulations 1997.
Felling licences. Garden trees are exempt, but felling more than five cubic metres of timber in a calendar quarter from woodland, paddocks or field boundaries generally needs a licence from the Forestry Commission.

The National Landscape designation does not ban tree work, but it sits alongside conservation areas and Tree Preservation Orders, which do require permission. In practice, assume a mature tree in the valley is protected until checked, and allow time for notice before booking.
How long does permission take?
Conservation area notices normally run for six weeks before work can start. Tree Preservation Order applications are decided by the council and can take longer. If you have a deadline, start the process as early as you can, and we will handle the paperwork.
Can you work on ash trees affected by dieback?
Yes, and it is common work through the valley. Infected ash turns brittle and unpredictable, so a tree near a lane, house or footpath is better dealt with while it is still safe to climb. Ash with healthy crowns can often be left and monitored instead.
Do you re-cut old pollarded willows along the Stour?
Yes. Willows on the water meadows were traditionally pollarded, and those left too long grow heavy crowns that tear the trunk apart. Lapsed pollards are usually restored gradually over several visits rather than cut back hard in one go.
How do you manage access in the narrow streets?
By planning it before the day. The chipper parks as close as it safely can, material is carried out from the garden, and where a street is too tight we work from the nearest legal spot. Photos of the route from the road help us quote accurately.
