The estates built from the 1990s onwards around Tollgate and western Stanway came with small gardens and young planted trees. My garden tree has outgrown the plot. Reduce or remove?
It depends on the species and how close it is. Birch, cherry and maple usually reduce well and can be kept. A forest species such as oak, poplar or willow a few metres from a house will keep coming back, and removal with replanting is often the more sensible answer.
Can a conifer screen between houses be reduced?
Usually. Height can come off and the sides trimmed as far as green growth, but conifers do not regrow from bare brown wood. On tight estate plots, a hedge kept to a regular cut is far cheaper than a renovation every few years.
How do you work on a small garden?
The tree is taken down or reduced in small sections, with material lowered rather than dropped, and everything is chipped as the work goes. There is rarely anywhere to stack brash on an estate plot, so the garden stays usable while the job is in progress.
